Fans of improv comedy may want to think about a trip to Summerside on April 7 for the community’s first Improv Invitational.

Spotlight School of Arts Inc. is presenting the event, which is open to youth improv teams, ages 13 to 18, at the school’s 227 Water St. location.

“Improv is an excellent tool for actors and can also be incredibly useful outside of a theatre setting,” said Monica Kani, improv instructor at Spotlight.

“Improv helps you to be more present, to think on your feet, work well with others, and approach all situations positively. An event like this is an amazing way for young improvisers to learn from professionals and meet other people who share the same interests.” Workshops are being presented by members of groups like the Popalopalots and the Mount Allison Improv Team. After a day of workshops the event will culminate in an evening improv battle royale, where participants will have a chance to perform and square off against other Island teams. The evening performance will be the Celtic Performing Arts Centre at the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada at 619 Water St. The battle is open to the public, starts at 7:30 p.m. and admission is by donation, which will go towards the school’s scholarship fund.

Teams interested in participating in the Improv Invitational can contact Reasha or Monica at Spotlight.
