Mount Tryon man walking along highway dies after being struck by car
Sylvia and Kenny Baglole were sitting at home Monday night when they heard what sounded like a car door slamming shut.
A short time later, firefighters, RCMP and Island EMS converged near the intersection of Bradford Road and Route 1A, only a few metres away from the Bagloles’ front door. When Kenny walked up to see what was going on, an RCMP officer told him he could go no further.
They found out later that an 81-year-old man from Mount Tryon had been struck and killed while walking away from Howatt’s Shell gas station, just around the corner.
It’s a terrible thing to have happen so close to home, said Sylvia, Tuesday afternoon.
“Just outside the door – scary,” she said.
People frequenting businesses in the area Tuesday also expressed shock and sadness at the event.
it’s Allan Larson was heading home from work Monday evening when he encountered the detour due to the crash. Buying a snack at Howatt’s Tuesday morning, he shook his head at the news that someone had died.
“It’s always hard,” said Larson.
According to the East Prince RCMP, a 911 call was placed at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday to report a collision between a pedestrian and a passenger vehicle. RCMP Staff Sergeant Derrick Hewitt added that the driver of the vehicle was not injured and that they stopped at the scene after the collision. However, citing the ongoing investigation, he said no further information would be released about the driver.
The RCMP collision analyst, provincial coroner, Island EMS, Borden-Carleton Fire Department and the Department of Transportation all assisted at the scene.
Traffic was diverted around the scene for several hours but reopened early Tuesday morning.
