Creating opportunities

- BY SUSAN ROGERS GUEST COMMENTARY Susan Rogers is a Summerside-based author.

When I was a child growing up in Summerside, the only creative acting outlet I had access to was when the teacher asked for volunteers to read parts of a play in class. Now, there are multiple wonderful opportunities available for children with dreams of acting. And I want to add one more.

I want to build a film industry right here in little ole P.E.I. But I need your help.

I’m working on raising investment for my very first feature film, “Still The Water”, which is shooting on the Island this year. Once we amaze the world with this inspiring film, it’ll be easier to finance the next, and the next and the next and the next. This means opportunities for children and

adults as actors - film acting is very different from theatre acting, and requires a body of knowledge integral to acting for the camera - as well as for crew, and for folks who choose to work in film in general and who want to live and work on the Island.

As far as I know, “Still The Water” is the biggest islandproduced film ever. And it’s got a lot going for it, such as: having one of Canada’s best directors of photography – camera. The film will feature poignant, beautiful island music by artists such as Catherine MacLellan, Nathan Wiley, Lennie Gallant, and Irish Mythen. My Drifters books are popular and well-loved, so my storytelling is proven (See www. susanrodgersauthor.com).

I have a special gift for matching music and image to create heightened emotion - this film is going to be very special

Once we make this first feature, new avenues of partnerships and funding will open up for us. This will be the first film of many. My Drifters series was just optioned for TV. We can ride that wave of success with this movie, in terms of getting it out to the marketplace. The marketplace is bigger than ever before - with so many new digital channels emerging, and the commercial nature of our film, it is poised to do well. Our main cast is coming from Toronto and Vancouver. They’re experienced on-camera actors from whom our local actors stand to learn a lot for future productions. Action lovers will love the hockey and fishing in the movie.

Our publicist was once a publicist for CTV in Toronto she knows the ins and outs of creating a buzz and currently has a film in the marketplace that just got picked up by a major U.S. distributor.

I’m not asking for donations. I’m asking you to consider investing in something that could mean a dynamic and engaging film industry right here on Prince Edward Island. Our RRSP based investment / shareholder program offers a 35 per cent tax credit as well as a further RRSP credit at tax time. It is a win-win.

For more information visit: www.stillthewatermovie.ca, or call 724-2883. Spread the word amongst people you work with or know who are fans of hockey, fishing, acting and storytelling, or anyone you know who loves the arts or who believes we can build an industry here, and who wants to be part of such a special feature film. We cannot do this alone. “It takes a Village.”
