Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside will honour the memory of Brodie McCarthy on Friday. McCarthy, a senior at Montague Regional High School, passed away early this week from a serious head injury suffered during a game in the 22nd annual David Voye Memorial rugby tournament at Three Oaks on May 11.

“We are doing a jersey day Friday in memory of Brodie McCarthy,” explained Hope DesRoche, a captain with the Three Oaks Axewomen senior AAA team. “We are asking anyone to bring a jersey and bring a donation to go towards the scholarship fund that has been set up in Brodie’s memory.”

Jordan Arsenault, captain of the senior AAA Axemen, added, “It’s real important for us to show our support to the family, show that we are here for them and show them that our whole school and rugby community is thinking about them at this tough time.”

The Three Oaks senior AAA and A rugby teams are expected to wear their team jerseys.

“We ask that the other staff members and students if they have a rugby jersey they can wear that, but Brodie also played hockey, so people can wear a hockey jersey,” said Axewomen head coach Tim Hockin. “If people don’t have a jersey there’s no pressure whatsoever, and maybe they will contribute to the scholarship.” DesRoche acknowledged news of McCarthy’s passing had an impact on the entire rugby community.

“It definitely hit everybody on the rugby teams pretty hard for sure, which is understandable,” said DesRoche. “Definitely, in the school, you had a sense that everyone was dealing with it and grieving with it in their own way. There were a lot of hugs and talking, and people were really there for each other.”

Hockin said it’s important for Three Oaks to show “respect and support” for the McCarthy family. “The rugby community is really tight knit,” said Arsenault. “Everyone is always looking out for each other.”
