Tignish Council raises cellphones and driving concern
Tignish Town Council called on the RCMP this week to place extra emphasis on combatting the use of cellphones while driving. Mayor Allan McInnis suggested to Staff Sergeant Derrick Hewitt during the town’s monthly meeting that about 30 to 40 per cent of the divers he meets in the community are on their cell phones or texting while behind the wheel. “I don’t disbelieve that,” the staff sergeant responded. McInnis viewed the practice as a safety concern, and the officer agreed, indicating he will bring that concern to the attention of officers on patrol. Despite that issue, McInnis continued to applaud the RCMP for stepped-up patrols in recent months, indicating residents are complimentary of the enhanced presence. He believes speeding and the use of ATVs on streets has decreased. He acknowledged the decrease in ATV activity could also be attributable to the local ATV club for welcoming the riders to their clubhouse and trails.
