Regals sweep games

Western off to 4-0 start in midget AAA

The Western Regals swept a pair of inter-locking games on the road against Moncton over the weekend.

The Regals, who sit atop the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League standings at 4-0 (won-lost), won 11-3 on Saturday and 8-5 on Sunday. In other weekend action, the Kings County Kings edged the Mid-Isle Matrix 2-1 on Friday night.

At the Superior Propane Centre, Sam Hackett (2), Michael McRae (2), Thomas Rennie (1-1) and Chase Gaudette (1-1) provided goals for the Albertonba­sed Regals. Jack Reilly (3), Carter Cahill (2) and Thomas Shea (2) had multiple assists.

Moncton led 3-2 after the first period, and the teams were tied 5-5 after two.

Western starting goaltender Cole Gallant allowed five goals on 22 shots through the first 40 minutes. Aiden Williams came on in relief, and stopped all eight shots he faced in the final frame.

At the Kay Arena, Gaudette (3-1), Ethan Reilly (2-1), Hackett (1-1), Alex Hutchinson (1-1), Kennedy Gallant (1-1), Shea, Jack Reilly and Conor Horne lit the lamp for Western. Rennie and Ethan Oliver each added a pair of helpers.

After the first period ended in a 1-1 tie, the Regals opened up a 6-2 advantage at the end of 40 minutes.

Williams made 15 stops in earning the win.

Kings 2 Matrix 1

At the Eastern Kings Sportsplex in Souris, Jake MacLaren’s power-play goal at 12:21 of the third period broke a 1-1 tie. Cam White also scored for the Kings (2-1).

Landon Hardy answered for Mid-Isle (2-2). Kings County led 1-0 after the opening frame, and the teams entered the third stanza tied 1-1. Winning goaltender was Nicolas Jamieson.
