Red Wings hand Vipers first loss

Curklan Fraser had one goal and two assists to spark the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings to a 5-3 victory over archrival Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers at the Evangeline Recreation Centre on Sunday afternoon.

The win moves the Red Wings into a first-place tie with the Vipers in the Island Junior Hockey League. Both teams now sport identical records of 3-1-0 (wonlost-overtime losses).

At the Evangeline Recreation Centre, the Red Wings held period leads of 2-1 and 3-2. Chandler Wood (1-1), Silas Handrahan (1-1), Tristan Cahill and Chasse Gallant also scored for Western while other helpers were credited to Isaac Callaghan (2), Connor Morrissey and Jax Harper.

For the Vipers, Nick Trainor, Riley Smith and Garrett Murray dented the twine. Ryan McKenna (2) and Parker Ronahan added assists.

Luke Oliver earned the goaltending win with a 31-save effort while Caleb Coyle made 37 stops for the Vipers.

Metros lose

In other action Saturday night, the Moncton Vitos outlasted the visiting Sherwood-Parkdale A&S Scrap Metal Metros 8-5 in an inter-locking game with the New Brunswick Junior Hockey League.

Patrick Landry (3-3), Brock McEwen (1-2), Louis-Joseph Vachon, Nicholas Bacso and Mack Campbell lit the lamp for the Vitos.

Cale Pierce (1-1), Nick Currie, Barrington Duffy, Jordan Birt and Alex Hambly replied for the Metros (1-4-0). Moncton led 2-1 after the opening period, and the teams were tied 3-3 after 40 minutes. Winning goaltender was Julien Landry, and the Vitos outshot the Metros 43-32.
