Raising funds

Summerside Presbyterian Church pancake breakfast flips fundraiser to new heights

- BY DESIREE ANSTEY

Community members banded together to help raise money for residents of Heritage Trailer Park. The recent pancake breakfast is the first in two installments breakfasts before the fundraising campaign’s gala dinner on Nov. 3.

Coffee dripped into each mug, eggs were folded, and pancakes perfectly flipped as volunteers were kept hot on their heels in the kitchen of the Summerside Presbyterian Church, while they served a full hot breakfast to help raise money for those in need of relocation from Heritage Park, Saturday morning. “Communities are at their best when we come together,” commented Reverend Brad Blaikie, who was pleased to see every seat in the hall quickly filled.

“All the proceeds from this event will go to help the residents of Heritage Park, I’ve met a few of them, and they are thankful for the support,” he added.

In mid-May, residents of Heritage Park were given six months to vacate. The park is set to close on Nov. 30. The park is in need of significant infrastructure upgrades that were deemed too expensive by owner Steve Malayny. “Churches are not often known for working together that well and often, but this is a perfect opportunity to join alliances and help those in need. We are supporting this church and what they are doing to bless the residents of Heritage Park,” said Cory Somers, the lead pastor of Summerside Baptist Church.

“This is a mission where we are banding together to bless people in the community that in many cases have no connection to our church families,” he continued. “We’re throwing these funds to the larger Heritage Park project, to be divided equally between the residents.” Summerside mayor Bill Martin was among the volunteers. He said the event is “an opportunity for everyone in the community to be engaged.”

The next fundraising breakfast will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church Hall, located at 74 Summer Street in Summerside, from 8 until 10 a.m. Tickets are $8 per person.
