Volleying through the game
Colonels win all six matches in straight sets
Highschool volleyball teams faced off over the weekend during the annual Wolverine Classic volleyball tournament. The 2018 edition was the 35th installment of the event.
The Colonel Gray Colonels won all six of their matches in straight sets on Friday and Saturday en route to capturing the girls’ championship of the 35th annual Westisle Wolverine Volleyball Classic.
The Colonels, currently first in the P.E.I. School Athletic Association Senior AAA Girls Volleyball League, capped off their tournament showing with a 2518, 25-17 victory over Bluefield in the championship match Saturday afternoon.
The eight-team girls’ tournament was played at M.E. Callaghan Intermediate School, and 10 boys’ teams competed at Westisle Composite High School.
The Colonels’ Emma MacKenzie, who plays middle and right side, and Bluefield’s Ashlyn Carpenter were named players of the match for the final. Westisle athletic director Brett Corcoran was impressed with the calibre of play. “There were a lot of very competitive games,” commented Corcoran, who viewed the tournament as a very good experience for the Westisle Two entry that plays in the PEISAA Senior A Girls Volleyball League.
It gave them an opportunity to play against AAA-level teams, and they performed well, he noted.
