Local shop expands after cannabis legalization boosts sales

- BY ALISON JENKINS

Some local businesses are cashing in on the legalization of cannabis.

Now that it’s OK to buy and consume the weed, Summersiders seem more open about their enthusiasm.

Moth Lane Breweries timed the release of its brew Rolling Papers to coincide with the Oct. 17 legalization.

The timing was more for fun – the IPA contained cannabis terpenes, which are not regulated. But, as of the end of the month, they were nearly sold out, said owner Eric Wagner. Dino’s Pizza Summerside was a little extra busy, on legalization day - for a Wednesday. When asked, Rami Ayoub remembered a full house and a lot of deliveries, but can’t be sure specifically what caused it. “It could have been one of many factors that to contribute to an increase in sales that day,” he said. Adding his menu is designed around comfort foods. Tommy Biggar, co-owner of Island ReLeaf Glass, said business has been steady since the legalization.

“Absolutely. It’s definitely been steadier for sure,” said Biggar.

“I don’t know if it’s new smokers or if it’s just people who aren’t afraid to smoke anymore.” Co-owner Megan Patey said there are lots of first-time buyers and lots of questions.

“The store has been busier too, but I feel that there’s been a lot of people questioning and getting information that they’ve wanted to get for a while,” she said.

“People are starting to question the grow aspect of it too which is why we’ve decided to expand,” she said.

Island Re-Leaf is taking over the neighbouring retail space to stock nutrients, grow tents and lights.

“With the legal four plants that everybody’s allowed, it opens up that aspect for sure.” Islanders can only purchase their leafy supplies at Cannabis P.E.I. stores. Spokesperson Zach Currie said sales were “going well.” He hasn’t had any major supply issues, though several strains are on re-order after he sold the small amount he had to start.

Currie said he’s excited to remain aligned with the public priorities, stay socially responsible and offer a progressive retail experience.

“Be it the shift from existing sales channels, public education on the harms and ensuring Cannabis doesn’t get in the hands of minors - those have been very exciting for myself and the organization,” he said.

Biggar said his shop has had a good working relationship with the Cannabis P.E.I. store.

He said there were a few worried moments when the plan was announced, but accessories are limited at the cannabis stores. “We’ve had the uptown smoke shop send people here when there’s nothing there for them,” said Biggar. “They’ve been awesome to us, really, throughout the whole thing.”
