Eptek Centre seeks fine crafts for exhibit on P.E.I.’s natural history
It’s time to get the creative because the Eptek Art and Culture Centre has teamed up with the P.E.I. Crafts Council and they seek applicants for a summer exhibit called Celebration of Craft 2019.
Similar to previous fine craft exhibits organized by the same partnership, this particular theme will be on P.E.I.’s natural history. The exhibition aims to showcase a wide variety of craft produced on P.E.I. and, in particular, demonstrate to the public that there’s a wealth of talent that can found locally.
Celebration of Craft 2019, entitled P.E.I. Nature Inspires Craft will be a juried exhibition.
All artisans are asked to select an artifact as inspiration for their piece. Images of handcrafted artifacts made from Island-based materials, as well as items from P.E.I.’s natural history will be provided for inspiration.
The new work is not expected to be a replica of the original piece, nor does it have to be in the same medium or materials. In other words, a new hooked mat might be inspired by something handcrafted using P.E.I. pine 100 years earlier or a metalworker may be inspired by the bones of a P.E.I. animal.
In addition to craftsmanship, other criteria are innovative design, skillful execution of the concept and uniqueness. All pieces should be new work, functional, inspired by the selected artifact and ready for display.
The exhibition is open to Island craftspeople, both amateur and professional.
The deadline for entries is Friday, Jan. 11. Prizes will be awarded for the top three entries. Jurors will be looking for special crafted pieces rather than work that might be regularly offered in shops.
All work must be finished and presented at Eptek Centre in Summerside by mid-May next year. The exhibition will be on display from June until October.
All interested artisans should contact Eptek Centre to submit an expression of interest by email at [email protected] and provide artisan’s name, postal and email addresses, phone number and medium.
The PEI Crafts Council has promoted the making and appreciation of handcrafts on P.E.I. for over 50 years. For more details on the submission process or the exhibition, please call 902-888-8373. Its free to enter.
