Charlottetown major midget team edges Fredericton

The Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride continued its winning ways on Sunday.

The Pride prevailed 4-3 on the road against the Fredericton Caps to sweep a pair of weekend road wins, and take over sole possession of third place in the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League. Charlottetown, winners of three games in a row and six of its last seven, now sits at 14-12-1 (won-lost-overtime losses), one point ahead of the Saint John Vitos (13-10-2).

The Pride edged the Vitos 2-1 in overtime on Friday night.

At Willie O’Ree Place in Fredericton, N.B., Noah Griffin’s goal at 1:09 of the third period gave the Pride a 4-2 lead, and proved to be the game-winner.

Alex Graham scored twice and Reid Vos added a single tally to account for Charlottetown’s other goals. Jacob Squires (2), Hunter Bradley, Ed McNeill, Nigel Morris, Dylan Matthews and Sam MacNeill added assists. Joshua Nadeau (2-1) and Ben Lightbody answered for the Caps (7-14-4).

The Pride led 2-1 after 20 minutes, and took a 3-2 cushion into the second intermission. Winning goaltender Jonah Arbing stopped 20 of 23 shots. The Caps’ Frederic Plourde made 31 saves on 35 shots.

The Pride will be competing in the Chronicle Herald East Coast Ice Jam tournament at the BMO Centre in Halifax, N.S., later this week. Charlottetown’s opening game is against Pictou County on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. The Pride’s next league home game is against Saint John on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m.
