Caps make one move before trade deadline

Sivek dealt to Amherst for draft picks

The Summerside Western Capitals made one move on Thursday before the 7 p.m. trade and roster deadline.

The Caps traded defenceman Michal Sivek to the Amherst Ramblers for a second-round pick in 2019, an eighth-round pick in 2020 and future considerations. “Adding Jacob Arsenault last week put us at seven D,” said Caps general manager Pat McIver in explaining the deal. “We felt comfortable with the other six (defencemen), and we felt it was going to be hard to give everybody the ice time that they needed. “Amherst was aggressive and wanted to acquire a defenceman, so we made it work.”

The six-foot and 185-pound Sivek, who was born in Staten Island N.Y., appeared in 25 regular-season games with the Caps, recording one goal and six assists for seven points.

It was the second deal in as many days for the Caps, who picked up 20-year-old forwards Dylan Riley and Jacob Hickey from the Pictou County Crushers on Wednesday in exchange for 20-year-old forward Sam Meisenheimer and 18-year-old forward Calum MacPherson.

The Caps also received a seventh-round pick in 2019 and an eight-round selection in 2020 while the Crushers get the Caps’ third-round picks in 2019 and 2020.

“We recouped some of what we paid for Hickey and Riley, so we are happy with the trade,” added McIver.

Riley and Hickey made their debuts with the Capitals in Thursday night’s 6-1 win over the St. Stephen Aces at Eastlink Arena. McIver confirmed there were no other roster moves made. The Caps now have 20 players – 12 forwards, six defencemen and two goaltenders – and two open cards that can be used for players not signed with any team on Jan. 10.
