Veronica Smith took an undefeated record into Friday evening’s ‘B’ qualifier of the P.E.I. Scotties provincial women’s curling championship at the Western Community Curling Club. Smith moved to 4-0 (won-lost) on Friday morning. She scored a single with the hammer in the last end to break a 6-6 tie with the Suzanne Birt rink. Smith’s 7-6 win put the nine-time Scotties champion, Birt, on the brink of elimination in the seven-team modified triple-knockout championship. Chloé McCloskey, a former teammate of Smith’s, scored three with the hammer in the ninth end for a 7-5 win over Tammy Dewar in an elimination game on Friday morning to keep her chances alive. Dewar finished play 0-3 record.

McCloskey (1-2) was scheduled to face Melissa Morrow (2-2) on Friday evening in a win-or-gohome match. Another elimination game Friday night featured Birt meeting Lisa Jackson.

Smith was facing Sarah Fullerton (3-1) in the ‘B’ qualifier. Fullerton earned her third win Friday morning – a 7-3 come-from-behind decision over Morrow. Morrow led 3-1 going into the fifth end break, but it was all Fullerton when play resumed. She scored three in the sixth and then, after two blank ends, stole three in the ninth for the win.

All six men’s teams playing in the P.E.I. Tankard provincial men’s curling championship were on the ice Friday afternoon, Chloé McCloskey watches her rock during P.E.I.
