Sport P.E.I. and the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild have announced a partnership to raise funds for KidSport P.E.I. From Jan. 10 to Feb. 11, minor hockey teams across the province are encouraged to raise funds for KidSport, and the team that raises the most will have the members of the Wild attend their practice.

“We are very grateful for the support from the Kensington Wild and Hockey P.E.I. with this initiative,” said Ryan Innis, president of Sport P.E.I. “Community grassroots support for KidSport is key to continue our support for Island families.”

KidSport P.E.I. helps families who have financial challenges get their kids participating in sport. The biggest demand for funds is for the sport of hockey. On average, KidSport has supported between $40,000 to $65,000 in hockey grants in the past several years.

Since 1997, KidSport has provided over $1.7 million in grants for children across P.E.I. in over 20 sports.

Wild owner Mike Gallant is excited to have his team as part of this fundraising effort.

“The guys on our team know how important hockey has been to them, and the opportunities they have had along the way,” said Gallant.

“This is our way to give back to kids who want to have the same experiences.”

Strong season

The Wild currently sits in second place in the New Brunswick-P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League with a regular-season record of 21-5-1 (won-lost-overtime losses). The Wild is competing in the 2019 Chronicle Herald East Coast Ice Jam tournament in Bedford, N.S., this week, and won the Monctonian AAA Challenge in November 2018. The Kyle Dunn-coached Wild was also the first team from Atlantic Canada to qualify for the quarter-finals of the CCM Midget AAA Challenge tournament in Chicoutimi, Que., in December. Minor hockey teams are asked to register their team at www.kidsportpei.ca. Teams can determine how they would like to raise their funds. Individual donations over $20 can be receipted.
