Westisle and Three Oaks win PEISAA senior A titles.

SUMMERSIDE — The P.E.I. School Athletic Associatio­n/ Domino’s Pizza senior A basketball championsh­ip banners will reside in Prince County for the next year.

The Westisle Wolverines and Three Oaks Axemen posted close victories in the gold-medal games played at Holland College in Charlottet­own on Wednesday.

The Wolverines got by the Bluefield Team Two Bobcats 38-34 in the girls’ final, and the boys’ title match featured the Axemen outscoring the Souris Spartans 66-63.

In the bronze-medal games, the Morell Marlins defeated Three Oaks Team Two 36-24 in girls’ action, and Bluefield Team Two topped Colonel Gray Team Two 65-53 in the boys’ third-place game.

WOLVERINES 38 BOBCATS 34

The girls’ final game close throughout as Westisle led 20-17 at halftime, Bluefield was in front 29-26 after three quarters and the score was tied 32-32 with 2:23 remaining in regulation time.

Emma Leard’s long shot from the sideline with 1:20 to play, and a Heidi Thibodeau steal and drive to the basket for a layup proved to be the difference in the Wolverines’ four-point win. Thibodeau, who was named the provincial championsh­ip tournament’s most valuable player, finished with a game-high 12 points while Hannah Gallant added six points and eight rebounds for Westisle.

Eve Murphy (10) and Cassie MacGillvar­y (8) were Bluefield’s top scorers. Emma Langley added six points and 13 rebounds, including five blocks.

AXEMEN 66 SPARTANS 63

Both teams came out on fire and hit seven three-pointers in the opening quarter, including three by the Axemen’s Cameron Wall.

The first quarter ended in a 21-21 tie, and the Axemen were ahead 35-32 at the half. With eight minutes to play, the teams were tied 52-52 before a late flurry of baskets.

Wall, who was selected the provincial championsh­ip tournament’s MVP, had 27 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Axemen. Tyler MacDonald (19) and Kyle Cameron (8) were the Axemen’s other top scorers.

Isaac Chaisson (18), Jacob Outhouse (12), Matt Antle (11) and Steve Acorn (7) led the Spartans offensivel­y. Acorn also registered five steals, five blocks and seven rebounds.

MARLINS 36 AXEWOMEN 24

Kaylee Stewart’s nine-point, sevenrebou­nd effort paced the Marlins to a 21-12 lead at halftime.

Stewart finished with 11 points while Amanda Taylor contribute­d 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Marlins. Bailey MacLean added nine points.

Desiree LaPierre (6 points, 15 rebounds), Amanda Wedge (6 points) and Megan Moase (5 points) led the Axewomen.

BOBCATS 65 COLONELS 53

Hunter Prus led Bluefield Team Two with a 20-point effort. Luke McCarville (11), Carson Doiron (11) and Nick Mills (10) were the other top offensive producers for the Bobcats, who led 38-27 at halftime.

Christian Morrison (15), David Elsinga (12), Seth Doyle (11) and Caleb Briggs (7) sparked the offensive attack for Colonel Gray Team Two.
