Batchilder, MacDonald win titles in singles, doubles

SUMMERSIDE — Badminton P.E.I. recently held a junior tournament at Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside.

Although it was an under-15 and under-19 competitio­n, the only event in under-15 was boys’ singles won by Dylan MacLean.

In under-19 action, Dylan Batchilder and Torey MacDonald led the way by winning both the singles and doubles titles. Adelle Breau also won two titles — girls’ doubles and mixed doubles.

Five players competed in a round-robin event for under-15 boys’ singles. Dylan MacLean went 4-0 to capture the title, including a 21-19, 21-14 victory over second-place finisher Mitchell Ford (3-1). Ford defeated Haoran Shi 23-21, 21-19 in a tight battle.

Shi was third with wins over Malcolm Mitchell and Ariel Kleinman-Alarco, who finished fourth.

In under-19 boys’ singles, there was a very competitiv­e field of seven athletes. Dylan Batchilder defeated Yinxiao Chen 21-2, 21-14 in one semifinal match while, in the other semifinal, Yihan Zhang overcame a firstgame loss to win an exciting match over Spencer Gallant 14-21, 21-16, 21-19.

Batchilder proved to be the stronger player with 21-14, 21-8 victories. The consolatio­n round had great action with Brandon Gaudet defeating Brandon Hastings in a thriller 21-18, 17-21, 22-20.

Brennan Gallant then took the consolatio­n title by defeating Gaudet 21-14, 14-21, 21-14.

In doubles play, it was a threeway round-robin. Batchilder/ Gallant defeated Gaudet/Hastings 21-17, 21-13, and Chen/Zhang 21-15, 21-13 for the title. Gaudet/ Hastings finished second with a 21-17, 21-14 victory over Chen/ Zhang.

UNDER-19 GIRLS

Seven players were entered in under-19 girls’ singles. Torey MacDonald won her semifinal over Maiya Schmidt 21-18, 21-8, and Adelle Breau defeated Alexis Fougere 21-9, 21-17 to advance to the final. Both girls showed great form and shots, but MacDonald came out of top 21-17, 21-18.

Ryanna Ryan won the consolatio­n.

In under-19 girls’ doubles, Breau/MacDonald won both games in the three-way round robin for the title. Fougere/Ryan took second-place with a hardfought victory over Schmidt/Ziqi Liu 18-21, 21-17, 21-16.

There was a large field of six under-19 mixed doubles’ teams. Spencer Gallant/ Breau won their semifinal over Gaudet/Schmidt 21-10, 21-16.

In the other semifinal, Zhang/ Liu narrowly defeated Hastings/ MacDonald 16-21, 21-11, 21-12. The final featured an exciting match, with both teams showing incredible skill and determinat­ion.

Gallant/Breau ended up winning the match after losing the opening game. Scores were 16-21, 21-9, 21-14.

The consolatio­n was won by Hastings/MacDonald.
