Facing off against ALS

Fourth annual charity hockey tournament being held in Crapaud

- MITCH MACDONALD

Firefighters from across the province will be lacing up their skates this weekend in an effort to battle ALS.

The fourth annual charity hockey tournament hosted by the Crapaud volunteer fire department will see proceeds raised go to the ALS Society of P.E.I.

Seven P.E.I. fire departments will come together for the tournament, which kicks off toay at 7 p.m. at South Shore Actiplex.

The tournament has previously raised thousands for a cause close to Crapaud firefighters’ hearts. One of their long-time members of about three decades was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease several years ago.

The past few years have seen thousands raised through the tournament. This year’s goal is to raise $25,000.

“There’s been a very amazing response in the last three years from the community and fire departments on the Island,” said tournament co-ordinator Randy Shaw. “The community coming together to support this has been huge.”

The tournament will also see a draw, with a grand prize of two weekend passes to this year’s Cavendish Beach Music Festival. A second prize will be a 6,500 watt King generator donated by Spring Valley Building Centre, third prize will be a $100 gift card for the building centre and fourth place will be two weekend passes for the Junior B Atlantic Championships being held in Kensington.

Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased from members of the Crapaud fire department, or at the actiplex during the tournament this Friday to Sunday.
