EYE EXAMS FREE FOR TOTS

-

I have been writing two children’s storybooks namely, Anna’s Pink and Purple Glasses, and Jaya’s Magic Wheelchair. Leanne Bowlan, a licensed optician, is illustrating both storybooks. We have done much research throughout this process. My granddaughter, Anna, age 5, had her first eye exam. This was a scary, yet positive experience for her.

This storybook helps to allay the fear of a child going for their first eye exam.

Leanne has seen many children fearful of this experience.

I discovered a rather startling statistic during my research. Only about one-third of the kindergarten children eligible for the program take advantage of it. This could be because parents or guardians are unaware of the program or children may be fearful about going.

We will be distributing Anna’s Pink and Purple Glasses to all kindergarten and Grade 2 classes as a gift to take home. Also, Grade 1 and Grade 2 will receive storybooks for their classrooms and library.

This was made possible by several sponsors including Vogue Optical, Opticians Association of Canada, CUPE Prince Edward Island, Lions Clubs on Prince Edward Island, P.E.I. Association of Optometrist and Instant Imprints.

Thanks to these sponsors, there will be hundreds of very happy little girls and boys going home with their new storybooks. I am hoping that Anna’s Pink and Purple Glasses will inspire you to make an eye exam for the child in your care. Marlene Bryenton Charlottetown, PE
