HOW ABOUT VIDEOING GAMES?

-

Watched an interesting game at the A midget level at Pownal on Sunday, March 1. The contestants were a team from Sherwood and their opponents from Sackville, N.B.

The game was close and the officials were doing a good job. Unfortunately, in the last 90 seconds, one Sherwood player entered the Sackville zone to the left of the goaltender.

The Sherwood player went deep into the zone with three Sackville players in hot pursuit.

They merged in the corner with the Sherwood player pushed to the ice by the sheer volume of weight from his opponents.

In the bundle of players, arms, legs and hockey sticks, the Sherwood player disappeared deep under the pile.

Arms and legs were everywhere and then the referee sounded his whistle and indicated a penalty call. It was the Sherwood player who was assessed a game penalty. Most of the crowd groaned because it seemed so unfair given he was under the pile.

When the kid objected as he was led from the ice, he was told the call was because his legs went skyward in a kicking motion after he collapsed.

I am not sure if any one of us could have not had our legs skyward with three Sackville players on top of us.

He was also told he would no doubt receive a five-game suspension.

It seemed so unfair.

However, maybe an answer to this sort of dilemma would be to video all games.

OK, I know it could be costly but would it really be that much especially if only tournament games were videoed?

Something to think about considering at every tournament there is usually a weird situation such as this to be resolved.
