Black Cultural Society of P.E.I. hosting events
CHARLOTTETOWN — Black History Month has kicked off and the Black Cultural Society of P.E.I. (BCSPEI) has a host of programming planned to celebrate and educate about the many cultures which make up the Island’s black community.
In a Feb. 2 release, the BCSPEI said this year’s Black History Month theme, The New Black: Celebrating and Educating, was selected to engage the community in defining and redefining blackness in P.E.I.
“It’s about creating a dialogue about where we come from, what we contribute and how all of that contributes to who we are as individuals and as a community, today,” BCSPEI executive director Tamara Steele said.
Black History Month began on Feb. 1 and ends March 1.
Program co-ordinator Reequal Smith said this year’s celebrations feature more events, storytelling, and community dialogue.
“We will bring in members of the community to discuss topics such as mental health, creating new opportunities, breaking down barriers, growing and supporting local black businesses and artists, and having stronger representation in P.E.I.,” said Smith.
Smith said signature events will include a panel discussion, lectures and community conversations on topics related to culture, heritage and their lived experiences.
Linda Hennessey is one of the community members celebrating Black History Month this year and will join the BCSPEI to share stories of the descendants of black Islanders.
"I have been researching black families and their history for almost 30 years. I am happy to share this information with the public," Hennessey said.
Other activities planned for the month include lunch conversations about health and wellness, presenting quotes and facts about black history on P.E.I., activity kits and storytelling for children, a film screening and movie nights related to each week’s theme.
