Six groups get funds for affordable housing

CHARLOTTET­OWN — Six P.E.I. organizati­ons are receiving funding to build affordable housing for people with disabiliti­es, those in recovery and veterans and their families.

In a March 30 release, the province said the organizati­ons will receive the funding through the Community Housing Fund, a joint program from the provincial government and the Canadian Mental Health Associatio­nP.E.I.

Sticks and Stones Developmen­t will receive the largest chunk of the funding worth $317,000 to help build a 17unit housing project in Hunter River, where six units will be affordable.

Stars for Life will use $200,000 to help purchase supportive housing in the Charlottet­own area to serve people with autism spectrum disorder.

Community Inclusions will receive $50,000 to research and develop a Snoezelen Room, a multi-sensory room for people with autism and other developmen­tal disabiliti­es, and specialize­d residentia­l units for people with intellectu­al disabiliti­es in the Tignish area.

Lennon House is getting $50,000 to investigat­e the developmen­t of transition­al housing for those who completed a recovery program and need help integratin­g into the community.

Funding in the amount of $50,000 is going to the Royal Canadian Legion for the design and planning of affordable housing projects for veterans and their families.

Finally, The Valley Cooperativ­e will receive $10,000 to create and distribute a guidebook that would help those interested in creating cooperativ­e housing.

The provincial government will also contribute $3 million to the Community Housing Fund to provide a third round of funding in the future.

Of the new funding, $500,000 will be used to fund Indigenous housing projects.

Non-profits, communityb­ased service organizati­ons, municipali­ties and developers can apply to the program for support to help create affordable housing options.
