Alberton man sentenced for 2023 fight at West Prince wharf

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. – A 20-year-old man from Alberton who cut another man with a sharp object during a fight last summer has been sentenced.

Corbin Harper will serve 90 days in custody, to be served intermittently. He must also serve two years of probation and will be required to take anger management classes. He is also prohibited from owning weapons of any sort for five years.

On Aug. 25, 2023, West Prince RCMP received a report of a fight involving an adult and a youth at the North Port wharf. Harper was arrested and charged shortly after police arrived at the scene.

He pleaded guilty in February to one count of unlawfully causing bodily harm.

The facts read in court regarding the night of the incident were scant, though it was said there was a party involving alcohol happening at or near the wharf. At some point, Harper got into a fight with another teenager and a sharp object was used to cut the other male.

The victim was taken to hospital and required three stitches.

The pre-sentence report on Harper was relatively positive and indicated that at the time of the offence, he was dealing with family issues that led him to experiment with drugs and alcohol.

Before sentencing, Harper addressed the court to apologize for his actions.

“I’m hoping (this) can all be moved into the past,” he said.

Judge Krista MacKay said that while the injuries the victim suffered turned out to be non-life threatening, they could have been much worse under the circumstances.

She also warned Harper about the consequences should he choose to continue down the path of substance abuse, noting that she sees first-hand daily the dark road it can lead people down.

“It’s best to clamp down on that now and make sure it doesn’t become a problem,” said MacKay.
