St. Thomas Aquinas girls hockey team wins PCI Classic.
The Saint Thomas Aquinas Saints girl’s hockey team won the Portage Collegiate Institute Classic in Portage la Prairie, Man. this past weekend.
Two goals from Saints forward Chloe Skead was enough to power the Saints past the Dryden Eagles in the gold medal game. Skead scored midway through the first and added a powerplay marker late in the third after the Saints finally capitalized on the plenty of powerplay opportunities that came their way.
STA had their road to glory started with a 4-1 win over the Fort Frances Muskies. Saints got goals from Brynn Rawn, Mariah White and Skead in the win. In their second game the Saints fell behind 1-0 to the Dakota Lancers of Winnipeg but stormed back to win 7-2. Skead had two goals in the win, Abbie Favreau, Shai Van Walleghem, Chelsea Henderson and Montana Neil also got on the scoresheet.
The Saints final round robin game was against the Sanford Sabres. The Saints fell behind 2-0 but clawed their way back with goals from Ally Turcotte and Henderson. Rawn gave the Saints the lead in the third but Sanford answered back, and this game headed to a shootout. White and Skead scored for the Saints while Faith Reid stopped two shots to send the Saints to the championship game.
STA’s local rivals, the Beaver Brae Broncos were also at the tournament and did not fare as well. The Broncos lost 10-0 to Dryden, Ava Baird scored the lone goal in an 11-1 loss to the hosts Portage and the Broncos concluded the tournament with an 11-1 loss to College Jean Believeau.
Both the Saints and Broncos resume Nor WOSSA league play today (Dec. 4) the Saints playing in Dryden for a rematch of this tournament’s final and the Broncos in Sioux Lookout.
The Saints were PCI Classic champions after beating Dryden 2-0 on Saturday, Dec. 1.
