St. Thomas Aquinas girls hockey team wins PCI Clas­sic.

The Saint Thomas Aquinas Saints girl’s hockey team won the Portage Col­le­giate In­sti­tute Clas­sic in Portage la Prairie, Man. this past week­end.

Two goals from Saints for­ward Chloe Skead was enough to power the Saints past the Dry­den Ea­gles in the gold medal game. Skead scored mid­way through the first and added a pow­er­play marker late in the third af­ter the Saints fi­nally cap­i­tal­ized on the plenty of pow­er­play op­por­tu­ni­ties that came their way.

STA had their road to glory started with a 4-1 win over the Fort Frances Muskies. Saints got goals from Brynn Rawn, Mariah White and Skead in the win. In their sec­ond game the Saints fell be­hind 1-0 to the Dakota Lancers of Win­nipeg but stormed back to win 7-2. Skead had two goals in the win, Ab­bie Favreau, Shai Van Wal­leghem, Chelsea Hen­der­son and Mon­tana Neil also got on the score­sheet.

The Saints fi­nal round robin game was against the San­ford Sabres. The Saints fell be­hind 2-0 but clawed their way back with goals from Ally Tur­cotte and Hen­der­son. Rawn gave the Saints the lead in the third but San­ford an­swered back, and this game headed to a shootout. White and Skead scored for the Saints while Faith Reid stopped two shots to send the Saints to the cham­pi­onship game.

STA’s lo­cal ri­vals, the Beaver Brae Bron­cos were also at the tour­na­ment and did not fare as well. The Bron­cos lost 10-0 to Dry­den, Ava Baird scored the lone goal in an 11-1 loss to the hosts Portage and the Bron­cos con­cluded the tour­na­ment with an 11-1 loss to Col­lege Jean Belie­veau.

Both the Saints and Bron­cos re­sume Nor WOSSA league play to­day (Dec. 4) the Saints play­ing in Dry­den for a re­match of this tour­na­ment’s fi­nal and the Bron­cos in Sioux Look­out.
