City councillors prepare for busy new year with committee appointments
The inaugural meeting of Kenora’s new city council saw councillors appointed to various city boards and committees. The appointments extend through the current term of office, expiring on Nov. 14, 2022.
Veteran city councillor Rory McMillan was given the lion’s share receiving 11 committee appointments. Coun. McMillian, along with Coun. Sharon Smith, were appointed to the Accessibility Advisory Committee.
Council also appointed Smith to the Kenora Substance and Mental Health Task Force Housing Pillar, the Kenora Urban Trails Committee and to the Northwestern Health Unit Board of Directors.
Coun. McMillan will represent the city at All Nations Health Partners, with Smith as alternate. He was also appointed to the Environmental Advisory Committee, with Coun. Andrew Poirier as alternate.
McMillan also received appointments to Kenora’s Age Friendly Committee, the Rat Portage Common Ground Conservation Organization and Reconciliation Kenora.
Coun. Poirier is council’s appointee to the Crime Prevention Network. In addition, Poirier will represent the city on the Kenora District Services Board, while McMillan was appointed as his non-voting alternate.
McMillan will also serve on the Heritage Kenora committee, with Coun. Chris Van Walleghem as alternate. Coun. Van Walleghem was also appointed to the Kenora Handy Transit Board, with Coun. Poirier as alternate. Van Walleghem will also serve on the Lake of the Woods Museum Board.
Mayor Dan Reynard is council’s representative to the Kenora District Municipal Association executive. Mayor Reynard, along with councillors Poirier and McMillan, were appointed to the Kenora Health Care Centre Board of Directors. Reynard will also represent city council on the Kenora Police Services Board.
Council appointed Coun. Mort Goss to the Kenora Airport Authority, with Coun. Poirier as alternate.
Coun. Goss will also represent council at the Lake of the Woods Development Commission, with first term councillor Kirsi Ralko as alternate. Coun. Ralko was also appointed to the Business Improvement Area Board.
Coun. McMillan received the appointment to the Kenora Public Library Board, with Coun. Ralko as alternate.
Council appointed Mayor Reynard and councillors McMillan and Goss to the Tunnel Island Common Ground Group.
Kenora City Council gets down to business with its first committee of the whole meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11.
