Gallik and Marcino to lead Catholic and Public school boards.
Catholic school trustee Teresa Gallik was voted in as chair of the Kenora Catholic District School Board at the Tuesday, Dec. 4 board meeting, defeating incumbent candidate Frank Bastone. All six trustees voted in the election.
Gallik was giddy after the election results came in.
“It’s very exciting for me. I look forward to working with our new director starting in February, (we’ve) got lots of exciting things that are going to be happening here at the Kenora Catholic District School Board,” Gallik said.
Voters first elected Gallik as a trustee in 2003. Bastone was first elected in 2005, but previously served as a trustee in Dryden.
Gallik had kind words for outgoing chair Bastone, calling him a strong advocate for Catholic education.
As for what issues she will focus on as board chair, she deferred to Catholic board staff, educators and students for guidance.
“The best expertise is going to come from the staff. They’re the educators and the best thing is for me to listen to the staff,” Gallik said. “They’re the educators, and also to listen to the students. We know student voices are very important.”
Gallik previously served as vice-chair of the board. Trustee Paul Landry was acclaimed as the new vice chair.
The trustees voted to elect the board chair after getting sworn in, giving a solemn declaration and saying an oath to Queen Elizabeth II.
