Introduction to the Joint issue
Every year, The Mcgill Daily and Le Délit join forces to produce an issue that acknowledges our common history. We have been working side by side as independent student newspapers with distinct editorial lines since 1977. Beyond our common roots, we share the purpose to select and critically examine issues that tend to be absent from the mainstream media. This year, keeping in mind our positions as independent student media, we wanted to remain critical of the many structural barriers that limit equity in access to knowledge and education.
In this issue, we have chosen the theme of Knowledge: Access, Barriers, and Exclusivity, in order to remind both ourselves and our readers of systemic factors that severely limit the accessibility of knowledge. In the following pages, we shed light on the many socioeconomic factors and power dynamics that render knowledge inaccessible, and hope to platform alternative, non-institutional free-form learning, while holding ourselves and educational institutions accountable.
