CALVIN POL WILL REPLACE AMANDA SIMARD
Amanda Simard, the new MPP elected for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, joined the rest of the new Progressive Conservative government of Ontario, June 19 in Toronto, for the party’s first closed-door caucus session, five days after the provincial election.
Simard is still technically a member of Russell Township council. During the June 25 special session of council session the main item for discussion concerned finding her replacement.
Council could not declare her seat vacant until the official notice appeared in the provincial legislature gazette announcing her appointment as an MPP. That happened over the June 23 weekend, after which her position on township council became officially vacant as of Monday.
Mayor Pierre Leroux had approached Calvin Pol, who sits on the township’s advisory planning board, about replacing Simard as an interim councillor. Leroux indicated that Pol was willing and noted that he sat as an interim councillor in 2014, to replace Craig Cullen who had resigned from council, then, to become the township public works director.
Administration will now prepare the resolution for appointing Pol as interim councillor for approval during the July 5 special session of council, which will precede the annual summer recess for council.
Calvin Pol, membre du comité de planification consultatif de la Municipalité de Russell, remplacera Amanda Simard à titre de conseiller intérimaire.
