Banners up for grabs

Immanuel Christian’s Eagles and the Picture Butte Sugar Queens will play for the Alberta Schools Athletic Associatio­n 2A girls South Zone championsh­ip today at 4 p.m. at Lethbridge College.

The Eagles and Queens won their semifinal games on Friday. The top-seeded Eagles beat the Claresholm Willow Creek Cobras 82-54 to make it to the final. Immanuel’s Paige Postman scored 26 points, and was closely followed by teammate Juliana Middel’s 23 points and 19 from Brittany Veldman. The Cobras were led by Katie Hart’s 23-point game. She scored 16 of those points in the second half. Emily Chartrand was the next highest scoring player for Claresholm, with 10 points.

Picture Butte beat the second-seeded Coaldale Kate Andrews Pride 61-53 Friday. Tasha Reiter scored 20 points for Butte, with Brooklyn Vogel adding 16 and Taylor Sortland 10. For Kate Andrews, Madison Wright scored 19 points, Skylar Nikkel scored 11 and Reagan Abrey had 10 points.

The third-place game also tips off at 4 p.m. and features Willow Creek against Kate Andrews.

1A boys

The top two seeds in the 1A boys competitio­n are at it today at 8 p.m. at the college as the Lundreck Livingston­e Sabres and Pincher Creek St. Mike’s Dragons continue their regional rivalry.

Lundbreck, the top seed, beat the Coalhurst Trojans 80-39 Friday, getting a 22-point game from Eric Cadonic, 16 points from Ross Cook and a dozen points from Brady Douglas. Keegan Zmurchyk replied for the Trojans with an 10-point game and Colton Munn added nine.

In the other semifinal, Mitchell Zoratti scored 31 points in the Dragons win over the Coaldale Christian Titans. Michael Svab scored 18 points for St. Mike’s and Chet Root added 11. For Coaldale, Jason Boeve scored 23 points and Bradley Oosterbrug scored 16.

The third-place game will see Coalhurst up against Coaldale Christian at 8 p.m.

2A boys

The Stirling Lakers continue to roll across the 2A boys high school basketball landscape. Their latest conquest was the Immanuel Christian Eagles, who lost 74-46 to the topranked Lakers. Stirling’s Lane Still scored 20 points, Steele Stef added 16 and Brady Sillito scored 10 in the win. The Lakers are without University of Lethbridge Pronghorn prospect Scott Mazutinec, who is injured.

Immanuel Christian fought back with 11 points from Landon Veluw and 10 apiece from Jeremy Van Belle and Jared Withage.

The Lakers will face the Kate Andrews Pride today at 6 p.m. in the championsh­ip final. The Pride beat the Vauxhall Vikings 82-43 on Friday. Jackson Kasko scored 26 points for Kate Andrews, Colten Pavka added 14 and Patrick Larson scored 12. Erik Anderson responded for Vauxhall with a 16-point effort, and teammate Liam Vulcano added 12.

Vauxhall and Immanuel will play in the third-place game at 6 p.m.

The 1A girls championsh­ip game was set up on Thursday, with Stirling facing Milk River Erle Rivers at 2 p.m. The 1A girls third-place game goes at 2 p.m. as well, with Bow Island Senator Gershaw up against Foremost.
