It’s championsh­ip Saturday at the U of L gym

The South Zone 4A boys and girls high school basketball championsh­ip games are ready to go tonight at the University of Lethbridge gym.

In the boys gold-medal game, the LCI Rams and the Raymond Comets hit the floor at 8 p.m., while in the girls championsh­ip, the Catholic Central Cougars and the LCI Clippers play at 6 p.m.

The boys and girls consolatio­n finals are also set for today. On the boys side, the Medicine Hat Mohawks will face the Cardston Cougars at 4 p.m. while on the girls side, the Comets will play Cardston at 2 p.m.

The Mohawks defeated the Magrath Zeniths 75-69 in the boys consolatio­n semifinal Saturday night as Matt Manas led Medicine Hat with 21 points and Anfernee Houmphanh added 11.

For Magrath, Tayor Cook led the way with 15 points, Ben Dow had 13, Paycen Blackmore scored 12 and Sam Payne chipped in with 11.

In the other boys consolatio­n final, Cardston beat the Chinook Coyotes 84-53.

Leading the Cougars was Brigham Smith with 14 points, while Max Russell had 13 and Shawn Leishman had 12.

Nick Myndio scored 14 points for Chinook and Zack Prankard added 13.

In girls consolatio­n play Friday, the Comets defeated the Coyotes 73-56 as Dez Jensen and Halli Baker each had 14 points for Raymond. Kansas Long chipped in with 10 points for the Comets.

For Chinook, Cameo Hanlon led with 14 points and Alyssa Hoveling and Haylee Johnson had 12 and 11 points, respective­ly.

Cardston beat the Medicine Hat Kwahommies 62-58 in the other girls consolatio­n final.

Bailey Nelson had a 22-point game for the Cougars and Ava Hardy added 13.

Kaesha Milne and Jordyn Kearley each had 15 points for Medicine Hat.

In junior varsity boys action, LCI and Cardston will battle for gold at noon at the 1st Choice Savings Centre, while the Raymond and Cardston junior varsity girls will play in the championsh­ip game at 10 a.m.

The Cardston JV boys downed Raymond 91-80 Tuesday night, while LCI defeated Catholic Central 101-75 in the other semifinal Tuesday.

In the JV girls semifinals, Raymond beat Catholic Central 72-52 on Tuesday and Cardston downed Chinook 68-53, also on Tuesday.
