Library a great place to join a group

-

We all know the value of joining a group to keep our motivation to do a particular activity high — one example is the success of gyms for physical fitness and we also meet with others to continue lifelong learning.

So whether you are young or old, joining a group can make the difference between giving up easily on an activity or gaining strength and inspiration from others whose passion may inspire you.

At the Main Branch and The Crossings Branch, there are many events that you can participate in: for book club fans, check out Bring Your Own Baby Book Club, Definitely Not Plato Book Club and a club just for teens, and don’t forget to ask library staff for book recommendations for great reads for every age.

As we all know, there are now a lot more accessible ways to enjoy a book. While audiobooks have been around for a long time, in the digital age where people have smartphones with an Internet connection, eBooks and eAudiobooks are popular. Many read only on their smartphones or tablets. It’s fun to experiment to see whether digital media is a better experience or whether you value paperbacks and hardbacks as a respite from a busy digital life. It’s going to be down to personal taste, and that’s a perk of helping nurture a young person’s love of reading: seeing what form their reading habits take.

For those who may prefer something a little craftier, join the adult colouring group or the Knitting in Stitches and Saturday Stitching clubs. If you are a fan of films, the New Media Film Series is dedicated to showcasing a selection of films that have contributed to our understanding of cinema’s achievements and signal directions for its future. Senior Café Chat at The Crossings Branch brings in speakers for a wide variety of interests. For those who like to hone their trivia skills, you can take part in the Wise Owl Pub Quiz at the Owl Acoustic Lounge once a month.

With the thought of spring coming early to southern Alberta, drop into the Horticultural Society presentations for gardening and landscaping tips. During the months of March, April, May and June, the library will be presenting several workshops: Culturally Different for Canadians and Immigrants; Basic First Aid, Fire Safety in the Home and Personal Safety.

Check the library’s Happening magazine for dates and details for all the programs noted above and for many other inspirational ideas.
