Interesting look at top 10
It is interesting to note the top 10 films of 2016, to date, and more interesting to see the breakdown by film studio. As usual, Disney with its many franchises (Pixar, Marvel, Disney Animation, and LucasFilms), continues to rule the industry.
I am happy to see other studios crack the top 10 this year though, including Universal, Warner Brothers, Fox and Paramount. I am somewhat surprised with no showing from Sony — I am sure they were counting on “Ghostbusters” to be more of a hit than it turned out to be.
Below are the top 10 movies thus far, listed along with studio, gross earnings, and release date:
1. “Finding Dory 3D” — Disney — 485,501,100 — 06/17/16 2. “Captain
—✦ America: Civil War 3D” — Disney $408,084,349 — 05/06/16
3. “The Secret Life of Pets 3D” — Universal — $366,201,540 — 07/08/16
4. “The Jungle Book (2016) 3D” — Disney — $364,001,123 — 04/15/16
5. “Deadpool” — Fox $363,070,709 — 02/12/16
6. “Zootopia 3D” — Disney — $341,268,248 — 03/04/16
7. “Batman vs Superman 3D” — Warner — $330,360,194 — 03/25/16
8. “Suicide Squad 3D” — Warner — $324,302,274 — 08/05/16
9. “Jason Bourne” — Universal — $162,169,190 — 07/29/16
10. “Star Trek: Beyond 3D” — Paramount — $158,848,340 — 07/22/16
Warner will undoubtedly add another with “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” the latest Harry Potter offering, and Disney will surely hit number one again with December’s “Rogue One” the new installment of the “Star Wars” franchise — just as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” did last year with its release in December.
Of course, 3D continues to play a major role in the top films (eight out of 10), adding to the total box office count with the 3D surcharge! I take pleasure in noting that several of the top 10 films are original offerings, and not just the usual regurgitation of sequel after sequel. This gives me hope that creativity and risk-taking is not dead in Hollywood. If original ideas are rewarded by box office attendance, then we can be certain that more will follow.
I am confident that Hollywood will continue to churn out product that people will want to venture out into a theatre setting to experience. See you at the movies!
