Copperhead­s top the Generals

The Coaldale Copperhead­s handed the Cochrane Generals their first loss of the season last weekend.

In a battle of the top two teams in the Heritage Junior Hocke League Southern Division, the Copperhead­s defeated the Generals 9-3 Saturday night at the Coaldale Sportsplex.

The Copperhead­s scored twice in the first period and three more times in the second before striking for another four in the third period on their way to the win that improves the team to 101, two points behind the 11-1 Generals.

The Generals opened up a 2-0 lead 4:46 into the game, but the Copperhead­s rattled off seven unanswered goals to take a commanding lead they never gave back.

Ryan Swier, Calvin Swanson and Tyler Anderson each scored twice for Coadale.

Jayden Smith, Clay Spencer and Matthew Nadeau added one each for the Copperhead­s.

Swier added two assists for the Copperhead­s for a four-point night and Swanson and Anderson each had an assist for three points.

Smith chipped in three assists for a four-point night and Sam Paskuski had two assists.

Dillan Kelly made 27 saves in the win, his seventh of the season and tops in the league.

The Copperhead­s hit the road to round out October as they head to Medicine Hat Thursday to face the Cubs.

Coaldale and Cochrane face off in the rematch Nov. 4 in Cochrane and the Copperhead­s return home the next day when they host the Okotoks Bisons at 8:30 p.m. at the Coaldale Sportsplex.
