Off-roaders key part of local economy

-

I and my family have been enjoying the Castle/Atlas area for the past 35 years. Our family ride dirt bikes, quads and snowmobiles in this beautiful part of the province. It is a great way to enjoy the mountain scenery through respectful and responsible use of the trail system that has been in place for years.

The Quad Squad and local groups spend lots of time and effort to keep trails open, build bridges and educate the public on proper and sustainable use. The local economy benefits hugely from activity through the purchases of off-road vehicles, parts and repairs. We buy fuel, groceries and supplies locally. We spend money in local food establishments.

The off-road community do their part in helping to keep the local economy viable. In the last five to 10 years we, along with many other families, have purchased recreational properties in the Pass with the understanding of having the privilege to off-road in the area. We pay taxes and utilities in the area. Many have used local contractors and suppliers to build.

Many of us spend eight to 10 days per month here. Again, we buy fuel, groceries and supplies locally. We support local coffee shops, restaurants, lounges, etc. We become part of the community.

The area has lost tax base, i.e. the Devon gas plant, and all its associated spin-offs. Thankfully Teck and the proposed Riversdale project and all the related spin-offs are in the community.

With that being said, the Crowsnest Pass cannot survive on this only. It relies greatly on recreation and tourism. The off-roading segment contributes a large portion to the local economy. All one needs to do is to come to the area at any time of year to see how important recreation and tourism are to the area. It is hard to see this from inside the provincial buildings in Edmonton where these decisions are made with the complete absence of common sense.

There is no reason that we cannot work together on a plan that encourages multi-use in this beautiful part of our province.
