The University of Letbridge Pronghorns track and field team threw and leapt their way to nine medals at the Canada West Championships.

After a four-medal showing on opening day Friday in Regina, the Horns added five more medals to their tally for nine over the two-day event.

The total was one medal short of last year’s output of 10 medals, a program record.

Pronghorns women’s thrower Lara Roth earned her second medal of the meet Saturday and ensured herself a trip to the U SPORTS Championship with a silver medal finish in the weight throw with a furthest toss of 14.29 metres.

On the men’s side, fourth-year jumper Aaron Hernandez won his fourth consecutive conference title in the triple jump.

Having to change his take off leg due to injury, Hernandez jumped 15.01 metres to win the event.

His distance is only 49 centimetres short of his personal best achieved on his natural jumping leg.

The Pronghorns once again took top spot in the men’s throws taking home gold and silver in the shot put.

Peter Millman completed the sweep of the men’s throwing events for the fourth straight year. He won the event with a distance of 17.54 metres. Ben Ingvaldson also picked up his second medal of the meet after earning a bronze medal in weight throw Friday.

In the shot put he finished second to Millman with a mark of 15.57 metres.

Braydon Posyluzny rounded out the Horns medal haul, winning the silver medal in the heptathlon.

Posyluzny finished only 25 points back of the gold medal position with 4,565 points. He finished first in the 60 metres, shot put and high jump events and was second in the 60 metre hurdles and 1,000 metres. Posyluzny was also third in the pole vault and fourth in the long jump.

In the team overall standings, the men’s side finished fifth with 44 points, while the women were eighth with 11 points.

The U SPORTS Championship meet will be hosted by the University of Alberta March 9-11.
