Exhibit showcases the work of University of Lethbridge students
Exhibit runs from Friday to March 17
Themes of impermanence are explored in an annual art exhibit intended to showcase the work of local university students. “Everything is Temporary: The University of Lethbridge annual Student Art Exhibition” is showing at the Penny Gallery in the Dr. Foster James Penny Building in downtown Lethbridge beginning Friday.
The showcase features a number of works by emerging artists at the U of L. The exhibit explores the transient nature of life, its moments of elation, anguish, beauty, banality and ways in which those moments affect people’s lives.
A number of different media has been utilized by the students, including photography, print, painting and sculpture.
The exhibit is curated in part by Ildiko Barraclough and Amy Parks, two art history and museum study students and part of a curator collective.
“The exhibition really displays a lot of different kinds of art from the art studio program,” said Barraclough. “It’s really diverse and exemplifies different ways of expressing (art) from our university.”
Parks said while most of the pieces represent the artists’ own explorations, many are also a culmination of skills learned in class and celebrate their progress.
“Being able to display it in a public place and having the public view your work, and being able to share it with a broader audience, is a different experience entirely,” said Barraclough.
Parks said she hopes the public will see the level of talent coming out of the U of L.
“I hope they can see there are a lot of bright futures for our artists at the U of L, but also that there are bright futures for people like (Barraclough) and I and our fellow co-curators,” said Parks.
“We get to express ourselves artistically as well, and also put our learning into practice. You can maybe see the future of museum and gallery curators can be shown here.”
Everything is Temporary runs Friday until March 17 at the Penny Gallery. A special reception will be held Friday at 7 p.m. to officially open the exhibit.
