Hurricanes power past Raiders

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

A power-play unit that clicked at 50 per cent helped keep the Lethbridge Hurricanes undefeated on their current road swing.

The Hurricanes defeated the Prince Albert Raiders 5-2 in Western Hockey League action Friday night in Prince Albert to run their current road trip to 40 and improve the team to 4117-4-3.

The Hurricanes went to the power play and scored three times as Matt Alfaro scored two man-advantage goals and Canes captain Tyler Wong inched closer to the 50-goal mark with his 48th of the season.

The Canes also killed off all six shorthanded situations they faced in Friday’s win.

The Hurricanes power play paced them to a 2-0 lead after the first period as the former Kootenay Ice tandem of Alfaro and Zak Zborosky scored for Lethbridge.

The Raiders pulled to within one at 7:58 of the second on a goal from Simon Stransky before Hurricane forward Egor Babenko snapped a six-game goal-scoring drought with his 21st of the season for a 3-1 lead with 3:46 left in the second.

Prince Albert pulled back to within one a little over a minute later on a goal from Max Martin as Lethbridge nursed a 3-2 lead into the second intermission.

Wong scored his 48th of the season 7:30 into the third to give Lethbridge a 4-2 lead.

Lethbridge struck on the power play for the third time on the night as Alfaro added his second of the game and 25th of the season for a 5-2 lead to round out the scoring.

The Hurricanes are 8-2-0-0 in their last 10 games.

Lethbridge goaltender Ryan Gilchrist stopped 38 shots to improve his record to 8-2-0-0.

Hurricanes wrap up their five-game road trip tonight in Saskatoon against the Blades. They are back at the Enmax Centre Wednesday at 7 p.m. against the Edmonton Oil Kings.
