Grade 8 students at Lethbridge Christian School are showcasing a jewel of southern Alberta in hopes of winning a ticket out east.

They’ve created and entered a one-minute video promoting Waterton Lakes National Park into the My Parks Pass “Canada’s Coolest School Trip” contest.

It is an annual Parks Canada contest, however, this year’s is extra special with the celebration of Canada’s 150th.

The class of 18, along with their instructor Allison Overbeeke, spent several months researching and working on the project. They hosted guest speakers on technology, learned about Waterton from a historian, laid out a storyboard, and took a class field trip to gather footage.

“We literally had ten stops along the way, gathering pictures and video footage. Then they had to bring it all back and edit it and put it together in a video,” said Overbeeke.

That proved to be one of the biggest challenges, she said, as there was so much they wanted to include.

“To put it all into one minute ... we learned that was the hardest thing. What do you say? What do you put in there?”

The video emphasizes the significance of being the first and only International Peace Park across Canada. It also showcases the natural beauty of the area, the wildlife, and opportunities available to enjoy the Park.

The project brought an opportunity to explore outside the classroom and use different mediums such as photography and video.

“It’s kind of a creative way of integrating Alberta curriculum, being innovative thinkers, being creative and thinking outside the box,” said Overbeeke.

The entire process of learning not only about Waterton Lakes National Park, but also about technology was an eye-opener for the students.

“They’ve had a great time. They’re so proud of what they’ve put together,” said Overbeeke.

The video will be posted online at www.myparkspass.ca, where people can vote once per day for their favourite. To vote, click on “View entries” then search school name: Lethbridge Christian School, and class name: Waterton — The Best in the West.

Voting opens today and runs until March 24. The top 12 videos with the most votes will then be judged for a winner.

The winner then receives an all-expenses-paid class trip for a five-day adventure to Parks Canada places in Nova Scotia.
