Cardston boys clinch top spot

The Cardston Cougars varsity boys basketball team and Wildcats junior varsity team scored a sweep during Southern Alberta High School Basketball League action over the weekend.

The Cougars defeated the Catholic Central Cougars 10565 Friday night at the Catholic Central east campus to clinch the varsity boys division, while the Wildcats downed the Cougars 73- 52 to improve to 12-0 and earn the JV division title.

The Cougars rounded out the regular season Saturday with a 94-86 home win over the Magrath Zeniths.

Max Russell had 27 points for Cardston and Austin Merrill added 25. Kole Neilson chipped in with 11.

Leading Magrath on the scoresheet was Brady Tollestrup with 19 points. Paycen Blackmore (17 points), Taylor Cook (16), Mason Stock (15) and Sam Payne (14) also hit double digits for the Zeniths.

The Wildcats won the junior varsity game 95-64.

Bryn Nelson led Cardston with 19 points, Taylor Barfuss had 17, Jayce Nelson scored 16, Mitch Olsen added 13 and Adyn Card hit for 10.

For the Zeniths, John Jones scored 17 points and Taylor Harker had a 13-point night.

In other boys action on Saturday, the Catholic Central Cougars defeated the Winston Churchill Bulldogs 80-66 as Luka Korosec and Nick Gibb led the way with 22 points each and C.J. Hirsche had 11. Ben Hoveling added 10 for Catholic Central.

For the Bulldogs, Noah Greenwood netted 18 points and Isaac Greenwood hit for 12.

In the junior varsity game, the Cougars won 86-54.

Nathaniel Moreira and Shae Gibb each had 17 points for the Cougars and Denelson Juda chipped in with 11.

Connor Hellofs led the Bulldogs with 14 points and Joel Alexander added 10.

In girls Divison B play Saturday afternoon, the Catholic Central Cougars lost a close one to the Medicine Hat Kwahommies as Medicine Hat posted a 68-66 win at the Catholic Central East campus.

Maitlynn Miller led the Cougars with 15 points and teammates Ashley Sazalski and Nikki Stahl each had 12.

For the Kwahommies, Rhiannon Ware led the way with 21 points, Bretonnie Stenhouse added 16 and Jordyn Kearley hit for 15.

The Cougars won the junior varsity game 81-32.

Skyla Sloan had 14 points for Catholic Central and Chloe Bevans chipped in with 13. Ashley Sazalski and Jankowiak Khloe scored 11 and 10 points, respective­ly.

Anya Bierbach and Brooklyn Kaczynski had eight points each for Medicine Hat.

In other action Saturday, the Magrath Pandas topped the Winston Churchill Griffins 6937 as Bethany Dow paced the Pandas with 26 points. Jianna Hubbard and Madi Miller each hit for 11 points for Magrath.

Jayden Lashley scored eight points for the Griffins.

Magrath won the junor varsity game 82-23 as Miranda Strate led the way with 16 points and Tayler Trainer and Montana Berezay each had 14.

Hailey Arcand led Winston Churchill with eight points.

In girls play Friday, the Raymond Comets downed the Cardston Cougars 83-79 as Dez Jensen led the Comets with 25 points. Gracie Heggie and Lyvia Jensen each added 12 points for Raymond.

Jill Nunn led the Cougars with 18 points and Ava Hardy had 15.
