HONOUR for Wong

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Hurricanes captain named Western Hockey League Player of the Week for second time this season

After hitting the 100-point mark for the first time in his career, Tyler Wong has been afforded another honour.

The overage captain of the Lethbridge Hurricanes — who registered three assists in the Hurricanes 5-4 overtime win over the Saskatoon Blades Saturday night to hit the century mark — was named the Western Hockey League Player of the Week for the week ending March 5, 2017.

It’s the second time Wong has been recognized as WHL Player of the Week this season. He was also recognized as the WHL Player of the Month for December.

Wong, also closing in on the 50-goal mark with 48, had three goals and 10 points in four games to help the Hurricanes go 4-0-0-0 on an East Division road swing this past week.

In a 4-1 win over the Regina Pats Feb. 28, Wong scored twice, including the shorthanded game-winner and the power-play insurance marker, as well as an assist in a 4-1 win.

In Brandon the next night, the product of Cochrane added an assist in a 3-2 overtime win and added a goal and two assists in Friday’s 5-2 win in Prince Albert over the Raiders.

He capped off the road swing and hit the 100-point mark with his three helpers Saturday night in Saskatoon.

Wong’s 48 goals rank him first in the league and his 101 points put him third in league scoring. Both are career highs.

As the Canes get ready to host the Edmonton Oil Kings Wednesday night, Wong is on a 10-game point streak in which he has 24 points (nine goals and 15 assists) dating back to Feb. 12.

With their 4-0 road trip, the Hurricanes are 42-17-4-3 and two points back of the Medicine Hat Tigers for first place in the Central Division.

The Tigers host the Kootenay Ice tonight.
