Leadership has lasting effect

‘POWERED BY PURPOSE’ LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE TO BENEFIT KIDSPORT LETHBRIDGE TABER

- Melissa Villeneuve LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Leadership skills can be developed through sport. Next month, the two will be combined for a worldwide one-day leadership event, with proceeds helping youth access sporting activities.

Leadercast 2017 “Powered by Purpose,” is a day of professional development. It’s also an opportunity to network with other local leaders during the event and virtually through the event app.

Scheduled for May 5 at 8:30 a.m., Leadercast is broadcast live from Atlanta to thousands of people. Locally, the event will be hosted by KidSport Lethbridge Taber and held at Lethbridge College. All proceeds from the event go towards KidSport.

Malcolm Kano, chair of Lethbridge Taber KidSport, said not only is it an excellent fundraiser, but it allows the people of Lethbridge an opportunity to hear from some of the best business leaders in the world.

“I’m pretty sure what they’ll take away is they can learn a lot about themselves and also learn a lot about how to better themselves in the workplace, also,” he said.

KidSport Lethbridge Taber helps about 400 kids per year in the area to access about 40 different sport activities they may not otherwise afford.

“We’re finding there is a huge, ever-increasing need for kids to get involved in sport,” said Kano. “We’re finding that there are more people coming out and saying we need help to get involved in sport because the costs are also increasing.”

Kano agreed there is a correlation between sport and building important leadership and life skills.

“I think anybody who’s been involved in sport knows that not only do you learn things about sport, but you learn things about yourself. I think there’s a lot of life skills that sport can teach you as well, so the benefit there is it helps you now, but it will also help you in your future life.”

The speakers for this year’s event include:

• Daniel Pink: author and expert on behavioural science and motivation in the workplace. Pink is host and co-executive producer of the new TV series about human behaviour “Crowd Control,” that airs on the National Geographic Channel.

• Andy Stanley: leadership author, communicator and pastor, who founded the Atlanta-based North Point Ministries in 1995.
