Council to hear Uber proposal

- Melissa Villeneuve LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The popular rideshare company Uber has its sights set on Lethbridge to launch a new chapter.

An Uber representative will come before Lethbridge City Council today to request a “minor tweak” to the city’s bylaws to align with the provincial ridesharing standard, which would allow ridesharing to begin in Lethbridge “as soon as possible.”

Uber has been adopted in more than 40 cities across Canada, with more than 1.6 million using the service, according to Uber statistics.

Lethbridge Pride Fest will approach City Hall for approval to bring rainbow crosswalks back to Lethbridge for a second year, in addition to requesting a trans flag crosswalk.

Last year, council approved the painting of five temporary crosswalks, bordering the Southern Alberta Art Gallery. This year, organizers will be requesting one permanent rainbow crosswalk, as well as one transgender flag crosswalk. If approved, the crosswalks will border the SAAG, as they did before.

Pride Fest is scheduled to run throughout the month of June, with the main events taking place June 18-24.

Council will also be asked to approve the 2016 City of Lethbridge Annual Report, and will receive updates on Access-ARide service improvements and the Intelligent Community initiative, as well as a final report from the Lethbridge Soccer Association for the 2016 U16 Canadian National Soccer Championships.

The regular meeting, open to all, begins at 1:30 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall. Follow @MelissaVHerald on Twitter
