For months, they’ve rehearsed in a spare classroom. Now they’re ready to take their high-energy show downtown.

Today through Wednesday, students of Wilson Middle School will welcome guests to the Sterndale Bennett Theatre — continuing a tradition that began more than two decades ago.

This year’s on-stage production is “James and the Giant Peach,” by playwright Roald Dahl.

While nearly 40 actors will be seen on-stage, producer Judith Meunier says more than 100 students are involved in the event, one way or another. Some will be displaying their visual art.

“The Collage of the Arts is a longstanding tradition at Wilson,” she says. “We are proud to highlight the artistic talents of Wilson students, bringing together all elements of art in one unique production, through the magic of a professional theatre environment.”

The performers and backstage personnel learn a lot by working with theatre professionals at the Yates Centre, Meunier points out. They also appreciate the support they receive from the teachers at Wilson.

They include Lauren Granberg, the show’s director, and musical director Travis Conrad.

“James and the Giant Peach is a remarkable story of a young orphaned boy,” Granberg explains. “Dahl uses magical elements to make this story into a beautiful escape.

“Our cast and crew have been working tirelessly to create a unique world within the theatre,” she adds.

As the story moves along, audiences will see how the boy and his friends deal with foes, trials and triumphs.

“We look forward to sharing this story with you,” Granberg says.

It’s the second musical presented in recent years, Meunier notes, offering audiences an opportunity to hear more students in the school’s fine arts programs.

Showtimes are 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:40 p.m. Tickets, priced at $7.50, are available online from
