New weekend offerings hold ‘Promise’

-

Two very different movies make their local debut this weekend.

“The Promise,” inspired by true events, is a sweeping love story amid the horrors of war starring Oscar Isaac and Christian Bale. It is rated 14A with a violence warning. It runs 133 minutes long and will play nightly at 6:40 and 9:25 p.m.

“Ozzy” is a cute animated film about a dog left behind while its owners go away on vacation. It is rated G, is 90 minutes long and plays daily at 1:35 and 4:30 p.m.

Rotten Tomatoes says of “The Promise:” “Empires fall, love survives. When Michael (Oscar Isaac), a brilliant medical student, meets Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), their shared Armenian heritage sparks an attraction that explodes into a romantic rivalry between Michael and Ana’s boyfriend Chris (Christian Bale), a famous American photojournalist dedicated to exposing political truth. As the Ottoman Empire crumbles into wartorn chaos, their conflicting passions must be deferred while they join forces to get their people to safety and survive themselves. ‘The Promise’ is directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Terry George.”

Regarding the animated film “Ozzy,” this is what the official site has to say: “Ozzy, a friendly, peaceful beagle has his idyllic life turned upside down when the Martins leave on a long and distant trip. There’s only one problem: no dogs allowed! Unable to bring their beloved Ozzy along for the ride, they settle on the next best thing, a top-of-the-line canine spa called Blue Creek. This picture-perfect place turns out to be a facade constructed by its villainous owner to capture dogs. Ozzy will soon end up in the real Blue Creek, a prison for dogs, run by dogs. Ozzy will have to avoid danger and find strength in his new friends, Chester, Fronky and Doc to escape the prison and return home safely. ‘Ozzy is an animated comedy-adventure movie targeted for kids of all ages and represents family entertainment at its best.”

Footage shown to us at CinemaCon of “The Promise” certainly highlighted the cinematography, sets and costumes — which all look fantastic! Being inspired by true events, and sporting the list of actors that it does, should make for some enjoyable entertainment. As for “Ozzy” — well, I am happy to have an animated family-friendly picture any time of the year! See you at the movies!
