Young Citizens vie for trip to Ottawa
Every year students dig deep to uncover Canada’s rich history during the Southern Alberta Regional Heritage Fair.
The fair, which celebrated its 22nd year last month, allows students between Grades 4 to 9 the opportunity to showcase what part of Canada’s history interests them.
This year’s fair took place at the Galt Museum and Archives and three local students, and three students from near by communities, were selected by the judges and fair committee to participate in the sixth annual Canada’s History Young Citizen Awards.
The chosen Southern Alberta Young Citizens Award participants are:
• Cordelia Y, Grade 5, Milk River Elementary, Milk River, Project: Frank Slide
• Isla Stanford, Grade 4, Lakeview Elementary, Lethbridge, Project: Canada’s Flag
• Jayda Johnson, Grade 5, Milk River Elementary, Milk River, Project: Harriet Tubman
• Kailey Oakes, Grade 4, École Agnes Davidson, Lethbridge, Project: History of Canada’s RCMP
• Kalia Wong, Grade 5, École Agnes Davidson, Lethbridge, Project: Chinese Immigration to Canada
• Skylar Tong, Grade 5, Uplands Elementary School, Brooks, AB , Project: History of First Nations
“Each was given a video camera to create a short video about their Heritage Fair topic,” said Belinda Crowson, Southern Alberta Regional Heritage Fair coordinator in a press release.
“You can watch and share the videos online and vote for your favourites — the students need your vote.”
Twenty-six students from across Canada will win a free trip to Ottawa this fall to attend Canada’s History Youth Forum.
Thirteen students will be chosen by a popular vote and the remaining by a panel of judges.
Online voting opened earlier this month and will close July 7 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
