Heading into his fourth season as the head coach of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorn men’s hockey team, head coach Spiros Anastas has brought in an experienced coach to his staff, adding Lethbridge product Kevin Higo for the 2017-18 season.

Higo brings a wealth of experience from various levels of hockey to the Pronghorn staff, according to a release from the U of L. He has been a full-time coach since the late 1990s and has a distinct drive and passion for the game. Most recently, Higo was the head coach of the Grand Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).

“We are so excited to be welcoming him back home to Lethbridge and having him work with our players,” said Anastas. “Kevin will primarily be managing the defence, but will also be responsible for skill development.

“He will be acting head coach in my absence for my duties with Team Alberta in October.”

Higo began his coaching journey in the AJHL with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons as an assistant coach in 1998, then served as the head coach and general manager for the Barons from 2000-03. He then coached the Crowsnest Pass Timberwolves and Brooks Bandits in the same capacity before moving on to major junior hockey, serving as an assistant coach with the Moose Jaw Warriors in the Western Hockey League and Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Higo joins Brandon Greenside, who will be returning in his role as an assistant coach, along with Derek Purfield as goalie coach. Trevor Hardy returns as the team’s strength and conditioning coach.

The Pronghorns open training camp Aug. 29.
