Another life tragically lost to fentanyl

LETTERS

- Sarah Anonichuk

Accidental fentanyl overdose — David is gone forever due to this horrible drug!

Dave was one of my best friends. He was very intelligent, helpful, friendly, creative, loving, caring, funny and always there for me.

Even though we dated for three years and broke up due to his addiction problems, I never judged him. We remained good friends. We all have our demons, problems and dirty laundry … sadly Dave’s biggest problem was his opiate addiction.

Dave was literally the smartest man I ever met. He had A’s in every class. He was married once, he was a flight nurse/nurse for 10 years, he was a pet shop owner, handmade and designed his own beautiful jewelry. He got a scholarship and went to Germany to study history and the Holocaust … he even learned how to speak German!

I got married and he told me he was in love again and moving to Spain. I was so happy for him. We always looked out for each other, but the drugs grabbed hold … he was falling apart.

I couldn’t give him money because I couldn’t handle being the one that helped him get his last hit. Unfortunately, the drugs he bought had fentanyl in them and it ended his life.

He left behind people that love him. I will miss him probably forever but I will also let people know that these drugs are killing real people … it’s not just a piece in a newspaper, it’s good people like Dave.

Grieving the loss of him has been one of the hardest things I’ve had to face but he built me strong. Dave has left an imprint of the do’s and the don’ts in my mind.

To everyone out there … please take care of the people you love. Watch out for the drugs that are going around because there could be worse in them that could kill you. I do suggest not doing hard drugs but I can’t stop anyone. It’s a risk each time.

If you suffer from addiction, please reach out and get the help before it’s too late!

No one deserved what Dave got, no one. Life is in your hands. Be smart. Stay clean. Be happy and remember how lucky we are to be on this side of the dirt. Practise gratitude, be positive and please, be safe and careful!

Love to all!
