Book examines the truth about Christ

-

Bryan Norford, local author of a dozen books, has published his latest book, “John tells the Truth.” It is a series of notes on John’s record of Jesus Christ, concentrating on John’s passion for truth.

But what truth, and whose truth?

In the flux that is truth in western culture, Pilate’s derisive statement “What is truth?” is as relevant today as 2,000 years ago. Yet since the beginning of known history, humans have sought a fixed truth to take them through life and beyond.

How much more is that same need when common wisdom claims “all truth is relative.” That is no foundation for life. It can only create confusion about what is real, true and moral, creating division, conflict and instability.

John’s work emphasizing the deity of Christ and the truth of His claims was not just an academic exercise. He had a specific outcome in mind. John wrote these things so “you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.” (John 20:31)

However, for belief to be effective it must be based on what is true and real. That is why John concentrates on the truth of what He records about Jesus. Popular ideas of personal truth through intuition, or communal truth by democratic consensus, must eventually collapse, built on the shifting sands of “relative” truth.

John points to Jesus Christ as the antidote for human ignorance. Only the Creator of all things has a monopoly on truth. Here is the opportunity to choose the most natural thing in the world: walk through life hand-in-hand with our Creator.
