Drug suspect granted bail

- Delon Shurtz

A 51-year-old Lethbridge man facing several charges following a downtown drug bust earlier this month has been released from custody.

Jalil Ali Bahrami, who, following his arrest was ordered detained by a justice of the peace, was released on $400 cash during a bail hearing Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court.

The accused, who appeared in court by closedcircuit TV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, is charged with drug possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of the proceeds of crime under $5,000, two counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000 and two counts of possession of prohibited ammunition, in relation to the drug bust. He also faces additional charges of assault, shoplifting and breaching conditions of a court order.

At about 2:30 p.m. Oct. 6 an officer on bike patrol in Galt Gardens arrested a man suspected of drug trafficking near the pergola. During a search of the suspect, the officer found a bottle of methamphetamine, 15 pre-packaged baggies of methamphetamine, cash and two cellphones.

Police said the man had been driving a Dodge Caravan that was stolen from Calgary and which displayed a stolen licence plate. Inside the vehicle there were 21 high-powered rifle rounds and 19 shotgun shells.

Conditions of Bahrami’s release include that he not leave Alberta, report weekly to the police, not possess any weapons, obey curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. every day, and reside at a specific address on the northside.

The accused’s next court date is Nov. 15.
