Cougars top Coyotes in Tier II semis
Catholic Central Cougars took the first step along the Alberta Schools Athletic Association football championship trail with a 38-7 victory over the Chinook Coyotes in Tier II Region 1 semifinal action Friday night at the University of Lethbridge Stadium.
The teams battled through a scoreless first quarter before the Cougars blew the game open with 23 unanswered points in the second quarter.
Following a turnover, CCH quarterback Kai Sampson threw a 48yard touchdown pass to Jackson Laurie to open the scoring.
After Will Hughes booted a 34-yard field goal, Cougars again capitalized after a turnover as Tyler Takahashi broke loose for a 51-yard TD run.
Just before the half, Reid Leclaire intercepted a Chinook pass and ran it back to the Coyotes’ 30-yard line only to fumble, but Hughes recovered the fumble and ran it in for the major to make it 23-0.
Sampson scored on a naked bootleg from 16 yards out in the third quarter before Laurie took over at quarterback and hit Leclaire for a 24-yard touchdown pass to round on the CCH scoring.
Chinook got on the scoreboard in fourth when Brandon Hall scored on a seven-yard run.
CCH will play Medicine Hat High in the Region 1 final next Friday at U of L Stadium at 8 p.m.
InTier III play in Cardston Friday, the Cougars defeated the Winston Churchill Bulldogs 54-14 to claim the South Zone banner and advance to provincials as Region 1B rep. No Region final will be played. See Sunday’s Herald for the complete wrapup.
In Tier IV play the Taber W.R. Myers Rebels beat the Pincher Creek Mustangs 44-3.
The Rebels will play at Claresholm Willow Creek next Friday for South Zone banner with the winner the 1A seed and the loser 1B in provincials.
